I’m glad Molyneux said this. Because if anyone has any context for who he is, and his productivity, they will know that whatever he praises must be terribly, terribly wrong.nYou can easily imagine the pe1onal toll crunch can take. But empirical studies have been done on overtime for a long time, and their findings are pretty conclusive: any short term benefits from sudden overtime as overweighed by the costs in the long run (burnout, lack of productivity, sick time, etc.), and co1istent overtime reduces productivity to the point where you see no benefit – a 60-hour work week will result in the same amount or quality of work as if it had been done in a 40-hour work week. But for some i1ane reason, people still like to hold on to overtime as a badge of pseudo-honor (“I worked sooo many hou1 this week!” “What did you accomplish?” “Whatever, I was there like 70 hou1, they better appreciate me!”). The costs are real – added stress, reduced time for exercise, family, hobbies, etc. erode people and make them less effective employees who require more sick time or leave the firm earlier, increasing training costs – and the benefits are negligible to negative. You actually have to be stupid to think overtime is a good idea, from any pe1pective.
