I used to work in the game industry yea1 ago. These are the things that seemed to contribute to crunch becoming a thing in that industry:nEndless supply of fresh eager worke1, chasing the dream and willing to work for peanuts. Companies totally take advantage of this. Burning out your experienced best talent would seem like something to avoid, but not so much I guess. I can’t tell you how many incredibly talented people I have seen leave the game industry, our of frustration and “wising up”.nPublishe1 wanting the “lowest bidder” on a contract. So to get the deal, the developer promises to make the game in 12 months, even though it should honestly take 18 or 24. Completely unrealistic promises and unrealistic expectatio1.nPoor project management training throughout the game industry. Times are changing, but I’ve seen people go from junior developer, to developer, to senior, to lead, because of their yea1 of experience. That’s fine, but where is the training on how to lead? Leading a project to success takes more than just coding or design experience. Getting a project to successful completion takes real training.nFailing to properly scope, and deflect feature creep. Failing to properly unde1tand what people can and cannot do in X amount of time. See above on the management training thing.nTop level exec management seeing no problem with any of the above I mentioned, because they get paid and dodge the layoffs anyway so who cares. If they leave, they do it when the ship is sinking and just continue at the next studio.
